Yes its that time again where I road test a Beta Release of Fedora!

First I want to talk about the codename “Beefy Miracle” and I must say I didn’t like the name at first.  But now it has kind of grown on me a bit. It may be because of what I found when testing it.

Lets start with my review!

The Bootloader

I noticed straight away when booting that Grub now shows “Advanced Boot Options for Fedora” this is an awesome idea.  It hides away recovery mode simply making grub appear clean and more user friendly.

Wallpaper

The Wallpaper is a perfect example of what fedora is supposed to be. Simple yet stunning!

Mount Points

I plugged my USB Drive into the laptop I’m testing on to get the screenshot. I noticed that my USB Drive was no longer mounted in ‘/media’ instead I found it in ‘/run/media/affix’ I think this is a good idea as the world slowly moved into the cloud. I think its a good idea as with tools like spice where fedora and other distributions can be run on thin clients each user can have its own mounted devices on the host.

The Simple Things

Right down to the Scroll Bars fedora has been designed with the user experience in mind.

Stability

Featuring Gnome-Shell version 3.4.1 fedora has become more stable since version 16. I noticed a massive performance boost on this laptop than when I was running F16. My trackpad also performs actions more smoothly than with any other distro I have tried on this laptop.

Release Ready!

I believe if F17 was released today as a file release it would be accepted. However there are a few niggling issues that will be corrected before the final release.

The Advent AWP 10 AIO Printer doesn’t work at all with CUPS on Linux however a mac driver existed. That was until I learned about google cloud print. It’s a service from google that allows you to print remotely.

Surely though someone has written a driver for it. After frantically searching I found one. There are source RPMS available but as always I , decided to build from source. I tested it on my RHEL 6 System however this should work in Fedora, Ubuntu, Gentoo, SuSE and all flavors of Unix.

on RHEL you need the Development Tools and the cups-pk-helper and pycups

Configure your printer at http://google.com/cloudprint
Download from github

git clone git://github.com/simoncadman/CUPS-Cloud-Print.git cloudprint

Once downloaded change to the cloudprint directory

cd cloudprint

use the configure script and make install

./configure
make install

Now we have the CUPS driver installed we should configure CUPS with the python script provided to us during make install. on RHEL and Fedora it should be

/usr/local/lib/cloudprint-cups/setupcloudprint.py

Other Distributions will be

/usr/lib/cloudprint-cups/setupcloudprint.py

Although yours could be different.

This will ask you for your google account information. You should use the one used to configure your printer with cloud print. You can now print to your non-linux compatible printer. Print a test page by going to http://127.0.0.1:631 and select print test page from the drop-down with the value Maintenance.

Steve Jobs, Apple Visionary and founder passed away on Wednesday 5th October 2011 at 56 Years old. Those of us that use apple products know him for his revolutionary thinking and changes he made to the way we work. Even those of us that do not use apple products know that he made a difference. His contributions will never be forgotten.

Verne with Gnome 3.2

This post is exactly what it prommised. I have decided to take the plunge and install Fedora 16 Beta RC1 on my Desktop. (Before anyone starts on me I have the experience to run a beta on a production machine and have a backup O/S RHEL 6)

 

Here is a little take on what I have discovered about verne so far.

Better Performance

I have noticed that my system is performing alot better than it used to with Fedora 15 and Gnome Shell 3.0 I think this was due to some instabilitie in the gnome-shell itself and led me to turn to XFCE for a while. I do however miss the extensions I had for gnome-shell.

 

Gnome-Shelll Extensions

Currently the extensions in the Fedora 16 Repo’s are not working with gnome-shell 3.2. This is due to the way gnome 3.2 will be handling extensions through extensions.gnome.org

Default Wallpaper

The default Fedora 16 Artwork is absolutely stunning!

GDM Has a new face

The new GDM Has finally made an appearance on Fedora 16 Its the first thing you notice after GRUB2 ;)

GRUB2

The GRand Unified Bootloader 2 has made its fedora debut in F16. When installing it automatically detects your Operating Systems and configures them accordingly. This means no more re-configuring the bootloader to keep my RHEL Installation in tact as Grub2 does it all for me.
